Unfortunately, like all the main Chinese Associations here in Ireland, they are run by Hong Kong People who used their British passports to remain here. You can tell them by the "Gong Hey Fa Coi!" instead of the proper "Gong Shee Fa Choi!". Their Chinese ( or Cantonese) is almost like the Filipino language. Ireland has very few 'true' (or mainland) Chinese people with any say in Ireland. Most of the Honkongese strive for status, they really do, and they are disgusted when they find out simple things like Bertie or Biffo are not of a long line of royal bloodlines. They are elitists who have come to the wrong place. But they achieve this 'status' at the cost of the 'true' Chinese people. To be fair to the second generation of British/Hong Kong Chinese that were born here they are truly a gift to Irish Society. They are modest, intelligent and possess that Irish humility that will allow for them to achieve status and not buy it.

My daughter, of mostly Irish descent, will soon marry the love of her life, a young man born in China and brought to this country as a boy. Many guests will come from China to attend their wedding in May of this year.
Since different languages will make it hard to get to know one another, I would love to find a way to help them feel more welcome by having music that blends the sounds of both of our cultures. Will you please let me know of any CD's or tapes that you know of that we could have our disc jockey play at the reception?
The only thing I have found so far is a small portion of something The Chieftains recorded in China, along with Chinese musicians, during a jam session in China during the early 90's. It appears on You Tube. I think it is called "Full of Joy"
Thank you for any information you care to offer.
Marsha
